An extremely hardworking and innovative farmer practices conservation agriculture, agro-forestry, and bee-keeping and is a leading small grains farmer.The farmer, whose home is in one of Zimbabwe's drought prone regions, exercises effective water harvesting techniques that have seen her establish a flourishing fruit orchard regardless of the dry climatic conditions that prevail in her area. Apart from improving her household food security, the farmer has five farmers under her tutelage in the farmer- to- farmer extension programme. Hailing from Matabeleland North provincial capital, Lupane's Kwesemvubu village, 2006 Enviro-champ is Mrs. Maria Colleta Dlodlo.
Shabula village in Matshiya ward, Lupane is home to an enterprising farmer. This farmer's home and fields are surrounded by an indigenous woodlot. The farmer has a gum tree woodlot which was established in 1989 with the help of Forestry commission. He's into indigenous tree seedling and has also enthusiastically embarked into herbal seedling rearing. He is now a renowned supplier of herbs for distribution to other EAGs.This farmer has a very large nutrition garden, incorporating vegetables with fruit trees and herbs. Water harvesting techniques are the main feature in the garden. He is a pioneer in cassava farming and has a group that he works with. The farmer is, Njabulo Ndlovu, the 2007 National Enviro-champion.
The 17th of April 2009, saw Lupaka ward, in Lupane hosting a prize hand-over ceremony for the 2008 National Enviro-Champion. Ms Litah Sibanda has contributed to Lupane district producing National Enviro-champs for the past 3 consecutive years. MaSibanda, as she is affectionately known by fellow villagers credits her success to hardwork, sustainable conservation practices that she employs. MaSibanda's home boasts of a flourishing nutrition garden which incorporates a vast array of herbs and fruit trees, and jatropha woodlot. She has spearheaded the formation of an EAG known as Zizamele, with 23 members affiliated to it.
Ms Litah Sibanda was handed over her Enviro-champion certificate, trophies and a gift of a wheelbarrow at a ceremony held at her homestead. Stakeholder representatives were from DDF, ZRP, Maguta, AGRITEX and Lead Trust. The event had 171 participants in attendance. The guest of honour, was EA Programmes' Director, Mr. Innocent Hodzonge.The day's activities consisted of talks from various stakeholders, field tour and the speech by the Guest of Honour. Lupane under all odds has proven to be a home ground of Enviro Champions in the last 3 years.
