This year’s International Volunteer Day runs under the theme “volunteering for our planet – rebuilding Zimbabwe”. The day was introduced by the UN – General Assembly in 1985 to recognize the contributions of volunteers across the globe. The national Tree Planting day is commemorated under the theme Combat Climate Change: Plant and Conserve Trees and focuses especially on the importance of the conservation of indigenous trees. The tree of the year 2009 is Azanza garckeana (S) Mutohwe, (S) Snot apple, (E) Uxakuxaku (N), a fast growing, highly adaptable tree which grows well in most agro-ecological regions of Zimbabwe.
On the occasion his Worship, the Mayor of Harare, will officially launch the Harare Greening Project that seeks to plant over 2 millions trees by 2015. The Harare Greening Project is coordinated by Environment Africa and the Harare Inner City Partnership and includes the Forestry Commission and City of Harare.
Come and join and make your voluntary contribution towards the climate of our planet and the quality of life in Harare. We will be planting at least 100 trees and need your help to make the event a success.
